Courtney Riddell, YASASHII Main Screens
This is YASASHII, the Capstone project for the Masters Program. The self created brief was based around the problem of cultural vandalism in busy tourist destinations and its impact on local well-being. I wanted to create something that helped guide tourist behaviours in a fun and educational way.
I developed a plan for an app that could provide real time guidance for tourists exploring Japan, along with some features for helping them plan prior to arrival. Being a tourist can be overwhelming at times, which is why this intervention was designed as an app. It provides a familiar platform to communicate with a tourist exploring an unfamiliar place.
Courtney Riddell, YASASHII Research
To better understand the problem space I was working in, I started my research on cultural vandalism, Japan's tourism sentiment and the particular behaviours that have been flagged as problematic. Once this focus was established I took a survey of possible tourists and how they perceived their own behaviours. This survey revealed that most people were unaware that their usual behaviours might be problematic for a destination community.
This research shaped my decision to make the behavioural intervention in an App format and communicate common tourist behaviour issues. It also brought about the illustrations of these behaviours, to communicate with the user in a fun and disarming tone.
Courtney Riddell, Energy Dashboard
This was a short project in the Interaction Design Studio 2 with a brief asking us to design an energy tracking dashboard and mobile app for UNICORN. The objective was to create a dashboard with all necessary features, that explores new forms of data visualization and accommodates the two unique user roles.
The outcome was a Bauhaus inspired design, moving away from high energy colour palettes that were seen in many of the competitor products. It is meant to be a functional tool with aesthetically pleasing colours and micro-animations to contrast the ridged data.
Courtney Riddell, She’s A Crowd Campaign Dashboard
This brief was provided by She’s A Crowd to the Design for Social Impact class. We were asked to create a dashboard that could help motivate and guide university students interested in leading action and a campaign against gender-based violence in their community. The research showed goal inspiration and motivation can be derived from other people's achievements. I leveraged this by creating a community for sharing community victories and did further testing to ensure goal tracking and visualization were motivational for the user.
