My academic background in English literature has equipped me with a deep understanding of narrative structures, audience engagement, and effective messaging. This, combined with my expertise in multimedia design, allows me to craft compelling visual experiences that go beyond aesthetics to create meaningful interactions. I believe that design is a powerful tool for problem-solving and innovation, and I am passionate about using my creativity to develop solutions that are not only visually striking but also strategically impactful.

Yi (Susie) Cao, 'Showcase'

This showreel brings together a collection of my creative works, including illustration, brand identity design, packaging, opening sequence, short cinematography, and experimental animation. It reflects my interest in visual storytelling across different mediums, blending hand-drawn and digital techniques. Through this reel, I hope to share my design journey and how I explore emotion, rhythm, and narrative through moving images.

Yi (Susie) Cao, 'Enchanted In The Frame'

This experimental 2D animation short tells a romantic story set in a magical art gallery. Using a split-screen format, it follows two characters as they explore the gallery, encounter animated masterpieces, and eventually fall in love—becoming the final painting themselves. Blending visual storytelling with iconic artworks that come to life, the film invites art lovers and animation enthusiasts into a whimsical world where love and imagination meet.

Yi (Susie) Cao, 'Shadows Of The Golden Gate'

This title sequence embraces the visual language of noir drama, using bold red and black tones with yellow accents to heighten tension and mood. Through shifting silhouettes and graphic shapes, it sets a dramatic atmosphere inspired by vintage detective stories. Featuring a mysterious dancer, a shadowy detective, and elements of Chinese aesthetics, the animation builds a unique fusion of suspense and cultural intrigue.

Yi (Susie) Cao, 'Voyage Through Time:A Journey Across The Water'

This is a 2D animation that explores the history of water transportation, from ancient rafts to modern ships. Using a flat graphic style and dynamic multi-angle transitions, the animation brings key moments in maritime history to life. I worked as both the illustrator and researcher for this project, combining visual storytelling with historical insight to engage viewers of all ages.

Yi (Susie) Cao, 'FlavorBurst'

This project features packaging and a promotional animation for FlavorBurst, a toothpaste brand targeting a young and energetic audience. Using 3D modeling, the animation brings to life three berry-flavored characters who form a playful music band. Each character represents one of the toothpaste’s flavors, conveying a fun, vibrant brand personality through rhythm, color, and movement. The design aims to blend freshness with creativity in both form and storytelling.

This short photographic film captures a girl's hectic morning routine as she rushes anxiously to the library—only to reveal a light-hearted twist at the end. I wrote, directed, and performed in this piece, using visual storytelling and pacing to build tension and humor. The project reflects my interest in everyday narratives with an unexpected angle, blending personal expression with cinematic structure.
