Settlement Upgrading
Settlement Upgrading
How do we co-design nature-based solutions to transform settlements into healthy and climate-resilient communities?
The Transforming Cities Hub approaches settlement upgrading as an incremental, cross-scalar process that strengthens climate-resilience through coordinated technical, ecological, and governance improvements. The work integrates nature-based systems with built infrastructure to improve water, sanitation, drainage, and waste performance while restoring local ecological function. Upgrades are co-designed with residents and other stakeholders, unfolding step by step. In addition to services, upgrades integrate improved streetscapes and shared community spaces. By working across households, neighbourhood networks, and city planning systems, the Hub aligns place-based improvements with long-term policy, service delivery, and investment, enabling more climate-resilient and healthy urban environments.
