Wominjeka Djeembana

Wominjeka Djeembana Indigenous research lab provides a space of Indigeneity, critical thinking and creative practice at Monash Art, Design and Architecture.

Wominjeka Djeembana are Boon Wurrung words translated as ‘come here to learn, listen at a place of knowledge and sharing’.

Wominjeka means welcome, but also a deeper relationality than just welcome. It is welcome with obligation, ritualised practice and learning.

Djeembana translates as ‘a gathering place for many special occasions for our mob to get together to barter, arrange marriages, to create dances, to pass on knowledge and to catch up with extended families and for new additions to family to be introduced’.

Wominjeka Djeembana intersects the relationality of Indigenous ways of knowing with practice-led research across art, design, curation and architecture (and beyond).

People

Led by Professor Brian Martin (Bundjalung, Kamilaroi and Muruwari), Wominjeka Djeembana comprises the largest group of Indigenous and First Nations researchers within Monash University.

Our projects articulate the importance of Indigenous knowledge for contemporary society through methodologies premised on the agency of Country and relationality. We partner with local, national and international collaborators to produce real-world benefits and impact.

How do we reconfigure knowledge through an Indigenous lens?

Our approach to knowledge is through an Indigenous lens, and how Indigenous ways of knowing and practice can shift how knowledge is viewed and therefore produced. The main aim of our research is to become a national and international leader in Indigenous ways of knowing through practice-based discourses.
