Gender-Sensitive Training for Safe and Inclusive Communities Microcredential Course

A pilot online training module for public sector staff in Victoria focused on gender-sensitive approaches for placemaking to support local councils in meeting Gender Equality Act 2020 obligations.

This course provided me with an opportunity to deepen my understanding of how the built environment is so impactful on women and gender diverse people, and what role planners, advocates and designers can play to ensure public space is more inclusive.

Manager, Victorian Women’s Health Service (Past participant)

The training aimed to raise awareness of gender-sensitive approaches for safer and more inclusive public spaces, supporting local councils in meeting their obligations under the Gender Equality Act 2020. This initiative was essential for improving women's safety in cities and towns by helping staff understand and advocate for women’s safety in urban environments.

The micro-credential provided foundational training in the key concepts, terminology, and challenges of gender-sensitive placemaking. Designed for professionals involved in planning, design, and policy-making for safer public spaces, it aimed to develop a more complex understanding of gender-sensitive issues and the imperative to address them in creating, maintaining, and re-designing public spaces. The course was relevant to professionals seeking to understand better how gender-sensitive placemaking can address issues of equity and safety.
