Adjusting to a new academic culture

Students on Learning and Teaching Building staircase

What is academic culture?

Academic culture encompasses the shared beliefs, values, and practices that define how academic work is conducted in universities (Brick et al., 2020). As you embark on your journey as a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) student at Monash University, understanding academic culture is essential for your success. This resource aims to guide you through the elements of Monash’s academic environment, helping you to adapt to its expectations and thrive in your research endeavours and overall experience at Monash.

Understanding academic culture at Monash

Academic culture shapes how knowledge is created, shared, and critiqued. At Monash, key components of academic culture include:

Differences from other academic contexts

For international students from diverse educational backgrounds, Monash’s academic culture may differ significantly from your previous academic experiences. Key differences may include:

Other students are asking...

Other students are learning…

Embracing critical analysis

When I first started my PhD at Monash, I was hesitant to critique established theories. In my home country, questioning authority was not encouraged. However, my supervisor emphasised the importance of critical analysis. Over time, I learned to confidently evaluate and challenge existing research, which significantly improved the quality of my work. - M, PhD Candidate in Sociology
Developing critical thinking
PhD CandidateI used to take everything I read at face value. At Monash, I learned the importance of questioning and critically analysing sources. This shift in mindset has made my research more rigorous and insightful. - P, PhD Candidate in History
Adapting to feedback
PhD Candidate 3Receiving feedback was initially overwhelming. In my previous studies, feedback was rare and often negative. At Monash, I learned to see feedback as a tool for improvement. My supervisors and peers provided constructive critiques that helped me refine my research and writing skills. - A, PhD Candidate in Engineering
Building a support network

PhD Candidate 4

Joining the Monash Graduate Association was a game-changer for me. I met other HDR students who were going through similar challenges. We formed a study group and supported each other through the ups and downs of our research journeys. - L, PhD Candidate in Environmental Science
