Alumni in South Africa have banded together to support the development of two Krishna Khetia Libraries at Zandspruit Primary School and Masakane Primary School, and a Krishna Khetia Children's Section at Emthonjeni Community Centre in the informal settlement area Zandspruit.
Armed with favourite books from their childhood they came back to campus to participate in a reading session for primary school learners from the Monash South Africa Saturday School.
As part of the reading session alumna and President of South Africa's Alumni Volunteer Committee Roselle Sherriff (BA 2006, BA(Hons) 2007) gave a presentation on the importance of reading. Alumni also donated books towards the libraries.
"It's so easy to forget that not everyone has easy access to books," Roselle said.
"It's been great spending time with the children, being able to donate books for the library, and making a difference to someone's future."
The library project honours the spirit of volunteerism and passion for education displayed by Monash student Krishna Khetia, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2010.
The libraries - named in her honour - were officially launched in November 2012. They will serve 12,000 families and provide a safe and healthy environment for the learners of Zandspruit.
