Mr Henry Byrne
Mr Henry Byrne is the Chief Financial Officer of Transurban, an infrastructure company with multinational operations. Established in Australia in 1996, Transurban operate 23 toll roads across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, the Greater Washington area in the United States and Montreal in Canada.
He graduated from Monash University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws and began his career in law working on the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Waterfall rail accident. The experience provided early exposure to complex systems, public accountability, and the real-world consequences of failure. He then worked as a journalist with the Australian Financial Review, where he developed an interest in business and financial markets.
Mr Byrne joined Transurban in 2007 in the lead-up to the global financial crisis and has worked across a range of roles spanning strategy, finance and operations over the past 18 years. His time with the company has covered a period of significant change, both within the business and in the broader economic environment. Over that time, Transurban has grown from a company with a market capitalisation of approximately $5–6 billion to around $45 billion today.
He was appointed to Transurban’s Executive Committee in 2017 and then took on the role of Group Executive, Victoria and Strategy in 2020. He then moved into his current role of Chief Financial Officer in 2023.
Mr Byrne lives in Sydney and is married with two children.
