Mr Dominic Yap is a Co-founder and the Chief Operating Officer of Zeller, an Australian FinTech reimagining financial services for small and medium-sized businesses. Zeller makes it easier for businesses to make and take payments in person and online, as well as manage its finances.

Mr Yap grew up and completed his education in Melbourne. A central aspect of his childhood was his involvement in family businesses. For nearly 30 years, he engaged in various facets of small businesses, ranging from food retail and wholesale to restauranteering. These formative experiences instilled in him a lifelong curiosity and passion for small businesses, along with a “hands-on” education in risk-taking and business building. Mr Yap graduated from Monash University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) and a Bachelor of Business Systems. He began his professional career during the Global Financial Crisis which also shaped his approach to navigating business challenges and opportunities.

Mr Yap spent eight years as a management consultant, six of which were with PwC Australia. There, he advised Big 4 Banks, mid-tier institutions, and FinTech startups on topics spanning product strategy, operations, deposits, and secured lending. At a key inflection point in his consulting career, Dominic decided to leave consulting to pursue deeper and direct experience in the FinTech industry.

He joined Square (now Block Inc.), an American FinTech, where he spent nearly five years leading the Strategy and Growth function in Australia. As part of the founding local team, he played a central role in launching Square’s product suite in Australia, shaping the industry regulatory environment, and introducing innovative technologies to one of Square’s early international markets outside the United States.

In 2020, Mr Yap left Square to co-found Zeller, where he now serves as Chief Operating Officer, overseeing teams across risk management, customer support, finance and treasury, data, and strategy. Zeller has rapidly gained traction, acquiring over 70,000 customers by mid-2024. Backed by major venture capital and institutional investors such Square Peg, Addition, Spark Capital, Headline and Hostplus, Zeller raised over A$180 million across multiple funding rounds and achieved unicorn status with a valuation exceeding A$1 billion within two years of launch. The company now employs hundreds of staff across Australia and other markets, underscoring its early success in challenging traditional business banking offerings.
