Associate Professor Kelli Innes

Associate Professor Innes has had more than 15 years experience as an emergency nurse and educator before joining Monash University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2010. During her time in the School of Nursing and Midwifery she has held several senior leadership roles including the Director of Education. She was appointed to her current position of Associate Dean Student Experience in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences earlier this year in 2024.

Associate Professor Innes is a passionate and dedicated educator with a focus on quality assurance and the student experience. She has led innovation in education to improve access and equity for nurses and midwives to complete postgraduate studies irrespective of where they live and work.

Her research focuses on educational outcomes and the patient experience in emergency departments. The impact of her research is evident in a number of ways including improvements to clinical placement experiences for students and has informed policy development on caring for patients in emergency department waiting rooms. Associate Professor Innes has 36 peer reviewed publications and has supported a number of students to completion of their research degrees.

Associate Professor Innes is recognised nationally as a leader in emergency nursing, recently appointed as President elect for the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia, the peak professional body representing emergency nurses, where she engages with government and other professional organisations to advocate for emergency nurses and guide policy and strategic direction on emergency care. She completed her doctoral research in 2019 which explored the waiting room nurse role in emergency departments.

She continues to be actively involved in teaching in the emergency nursing stream and mentoring academics in evidence-based education strategies.
