Dr Patrick Loftus-Hills

Dr Patrick Loftus-Hills, the second eldest of nine children, grew up in the Western Australian mining towns of Kalgoorlie, Kambalda and Meekathara for his first fifteen years before moving to Melbourne for his last three years of high school. In 1985, he enrolled in Science and Law at Monash University and graduated in 1991.

Dr Loftus-Hills has had a long and varied career, centered on the mining industry and finance. He began his career as an Industrial Chemist with BHP and then transitioned to the legal arena with Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst). Dr Loftus-Hills rejoined BHP as a lawyer in 1994 based in Melbourne and Perth.

He was approached by Macquarie Bank in 1998 to join as an investment banker focused on the mining industry.  For the past 27 years, while working for Macquarie, UBS and now Moelis & Co., Dr Loftus-Hills has led teams advising numerous major global mining corporations on a range of transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, financings and restructurings across the globe, from Mongolia to Mozambique.  Included in these transactions were the merger of BHP and Billiton and the sale of Alcan to Rio Tinto, two of the largest mining deals ever completed.

Dr Loftus-Hills was asked by UBS to transfer to New York in 2004 to lead its metals and mining advisory franchise. He spent 4 years in Hong Kong from 2007 leading UBS’ industrials investment banking before returning to New York in 2011 to join Moelis & Co., where he still works as a Senior Advisor.  Dr Loftus-Hills also serves on the Board of Directors of Ivanhoe Electric (NYSE: IE), is a Managing Member of Sweetwater Royalties LLC, and is a Senior Advisor to private equity firm Oryx Global Partners.

Dr Loftus-Hills has now lived overseas for more than 20 years and is based in New York City and Shelter Island, New York with his husband Konnin, while maintaining strong connections to Australia.

He is passionate about the power of education and the arts. Dr Loftus-Hills devotes time to non-profit initiatives including being the Chair of the Monash University US Leadership Council. He is extremely proud of the success the University has had engaging Monash alumni in the United States. The Monash University Global Discovery Program, of which Dr Loftus-Hills is a founder and has been a continuous supporter, has provided the opportunity for over 100 Monash students over the past decade to immerse in an alumni-led business-focused experience in New York City.

He is also an Ambassador to and Chair of Advance Global Australians USA; Co-Chair of the US Friends of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Vice Chair of the AUS USA Foundation and an Ambassador to, or committee member of, a number of other non-profit organization that he supports. Dr Loftus-Hills is a founder and active participant in Operation Rainbow Australia, that performs cleft lip and palate surgery in underserved countries and has been on over 20 missions with Operation Rainbow globally.
