Mr Marc Debney

Marc Debney

Mr Marc Debney’s pathway into architecture was not a linear one. Before stepping into the world of design, he worked as a commercial solicitor in Melbourne. It was during this time that he discovered his true passion lay in shaping and designing spaces rather than drafting contracts. This shift was not just a career change but a return to his creative roots.

Mr Debney had previously completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts from the University of Melbourne, which laid the foundation for him to see the world through a visual and conceptual lens. Making the pivotal decision to leave the law behind, and with a renewed commitment to design, he pursued studies in architecture at Monash University, where he earned both a Bachelor of Architectural Design and a Master of Architecture.

This transition set the stage for his career as an architect and later as a Principal at Genton, a leading design practice with studios in Melbourne and Sydney. Among his career highlights is his leadership in the Frankston Train Station Design Competition in 2016, a project that redefined public transport architecture in Victoria. Many of his projects have been recognised with awards, including the prestigious Prix Versailles award in 2021 for Reservoir Station, where Mr Debney’s work as the project design lead, showcased his commitment to thoughtful, people-focused urban design.

His work spans diverse sectors—from transport and rail to education, cultural institutions, and bespoke residential projects—but his guiding philosophy remains the same: architecture should be intelligent, enduring, and deeply connected to the people and places it serves. Mr Debney believes that good design is not just about aesthetics; it is about creating spaces that enrich lives, foster community, and stand the test of time. His approach integrates sustainability, functionality, and an acute awareness of the evolving needs of cities and communities. He champions collaboration and open dialogue, ensuring that the design process is as engaging and inclusive as the spaces it produces.

From creative arts to law and ultimately to architecture, Mr Debney’s career reflects the value of following curiosity, embracing change, and allowing passion to lead the way. As he speaks to the next generation of architects, his journey serves as a testament to the power of diverse experiences, interdisciplinary thinking, and the courage to carve out one’s own path.
