Mr Nick Shelton
Mr Nick Shelton is the founder, chief executive officer and publisher of independent media brand, Broadsheet Media.
Mr Shelton established Broadsheet in 2009, when aged 25, after returning from a stint in London to find that no Australian media outlets were reporting on Australian city culture in the way people were experiencing and talking about it. With no direct media or entrepreneurial experience, Mr Shelton started the business on the desk of a friend’s design studio. Now 15 years later, Broadsheet is the authority on culture in Australia and one of the country’s largest independent media brands with 2.5 million readers each month.
Broadsheet covers culture and community news across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, New Zealand and everywhere in between. The brand’s mission is to enrich local culture and inspire a better every day. Broadsheet tells the stories behind the country’s most exciting restaurants, festivals, exhibitions and fashion brands – and guides their readers to discover and enjoy the best of their cities.
Mr Shelton also runs Broadsheet Access, the brands membership offering and Scout – an employment platform for creative, media, hospitality and retail industry jobs.
Mr Shelton is a founding board member of the Digital Publisher’s Alliance, an organisation representing the interests of Australia’s diverse independent media businesses. This includes consulting to the federal government on media reform and parliamentary joint-committee hearings on the impact of global social media platforms on Australian society. In June 2020, Mr Shelton co-founded Covid success story, Providoor, with chef Shane Delia.
Since graduating from Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in politics and visual culture in 2005, Mr Shelton’s journey has been driven by an entrepreneurial spirit seeking to create brands and products defined by their ambition to enrich Australian culture.
