The Honourable Justice Shane Marshall AM
The Honourable Justice Shane Marshall AM has been a full-time Acting Judge of the Supreme Court of Tasmania since 14 August 2024. He previously was an acting part-time judge of that Court from January 2017 to June 2023. From 1995 to 2015, he held office as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and the Industrial Relations Court of Australia. He was the first Monash graduate to be appointed to a superior Federal Court at the time in 1995 and was the third youngest appointee to the Federal Court of Australia and the youngest to the Industrial Relations Court of Australia.
From 2004 to 2013, Justice Marshall held office as a non-resident additional judge of the Australian Capital Territory. From 2017 to 2021, he was a judge of the Supreme Court of Nauru for refugee appeals. He was a Deputy Chairperson of the Victorian Racing Tribunal from 2019 to 2024 and a member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal from October 2023 to August 2024. In 2003, he was awarded a centenary medal for industrial relations and in June 2020, he was appointed an Order of Australia (AM) for services to industrial relations, the law, the judiciary and mental health.
From 2005 to 2011, Justice Marshall was an associate member of the Judicial System Monitoring Program in Timor-Leste. He was an inaugural director and ambassador for the Wellbeing and the Law Foundation. He has spoken publicly about issues regarding depression insofar as they affect the legal profession in forums such as Law Societies, Bar Associations, law firms and defence legal personnel as well as the general community in conjunction with Beyond Blue.
Justice Marshall has been actively involved in the Monash Mentor Program. His two daughters are Monash graduates, one in law and journalism and the other in occupational therapy. Prior to his judicial career, he was a member of the Victorian Bar practising mainly in industrial and employment law. Prior to that, after graduating with honours from Monash Law School, he was employed as an articled clerk and solicitor in the industrial relations section of Maurice Blackburn and Co. in the days when the firm only had six partners and one office in a terrace house in Carlton.
Justice Marshall went to school at St Bedes College Mentone and was Dux of Humanities in 1973 and in 2008, he was inducted into the St Bedes Hall of Fame. He was the first person in his family on both sides to pass Year 10 educational level. Justice Marshall holds a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from Monash University.
