Ms Catherine McGowan

Catherine McGowan

Catherine McGowan (known as Cathy), a graduate of Monash University, has played a pivotal role in reshaping Australia's political landscape over the past decade. Fondly referred to as 'the godmother of the independent movement,' Cathy remains an inspiration for communities seeking a fresh approach to politics, free from the dominance of the major parties.

Cathy unexpectedly won the previously considered 'safe' Federal seat of Indi in 2013, and her victory was reaffirmed in 2016 and in the 2019 election she passed the torch to Independent, Dr. Helen Haines. Cathy's time in office is remembered for her commitment to integrity, courage to tackle the big issues and her innovative approach to community engagement. Her work motivated a wave of women to stand in the 2022 federal election as independent candidates, inspired to lead for their communities. The historic results saw an increase in women independent MPs that has changed the face of Australian politics.

As a Member of Parliament, Cathy concentrated on policies geared towards regional development, indigenous rights, and solutions for asylum seekers. Recognised for her unwavering political integrity, she was honoured with The Accountability Round Table award in 2019. Cathy's profound influence on the national political stage earned her a distinguished position among Australia's 'powerful' individuals by the Australian Financial Review in 2022.

Graduating in 1976, Cathy's academic journey coincided with the Whitlam era—a period characterized by political passions and transformative political shifts. Her book, "Cathy Goes to Canberra," documents her evolution from an idealistic student to a game-changing politician, detailing how she applied her skills and harnessed her influence and power to ignite positive change.

Following her time in politics, Cathy co-founded the Community Independents Project and continues to advocate for the importance of putting community at the centre of politics. She is an Officer in the Order of Australia, a Churchill fellow and lives very happily on her farm in the Indigo Valley in NE Victoria.
