Three Monash alumni have been awarded prestigious Fulbright Scholarships for study and research at leading institutions in the United States in 2015.

Professor in Health Informatics and leader of the eHealth Research Group at the University of Western Sydney (UWS), Anthony Maeder (PhD Comp 1992) has been awarded the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Agriculture and Life Sciences for study at Kansas State University.

Prior to his appointment at UWS, Professor Maeder was Research Director of the CSIRO eHealth Research Centre in Brisbane and Head of School in Engineering at both the University of Ballarat and Queensland University of Technology.

Professor Maeder’s Fulbright research project will investigate the development of mobile applications to support physical activity and nutrition programs.

Lawyer Matthew Crowley (BA(Hons) 2003, LLB 2003, LLM(LP) 2005) has received the Fulbright Professional Coral Sea Scholarship for study at the Federal Trade Commission in Washington DC and New York City. He will also be a Visiting Scholar at Georgetown University.

General Counsel within Western Australia’s Department of Commerce, Mr Crowley practises extensively in regulatory law and consumer protection.

The scholarship will provide him with an opportunity to examine first-hand one of the worlds’ leading and most sophisticated regulators and progress his doctoral work - a comparative analysis of civil penalty litigation in Australia and the US.

Dr Stephane Shepherd (BA 2006, MComn&MediaSt 2008, PhDMed 2013) has been presented with the 2015 Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship in Cultural Competence for study at the University of California Los Angeles and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Dr Shepherd is a postdoctoral research fellow and lecturer at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science at Swinburne University. He also frequently lectures on multicultural issues in forensic psychology and criminology.

Dr Shepherd’s research will help identify the level of unmet mental health needs of Aboriginal prisoners and existing gaps in culturally-oriented service delivery.

In all, 20 Australians were named Fulbright Scholars in 2015. The Fulbright program is the largest educational scholarship of its kind, created by Senator J. William Fulbright and the US Government in 1946. In Australia, the scholarships are funded by the Australian and US Governments and corporate partners and administered by the Australian-American Fulbright Commission in Canberra.
