Organisational change and employee engagement will be two of the headline discussion points when the Monash University Australian Consortium for Research on Employment and Work (ACREW) hosts a breakfast seminar on Friday, 19th February, 2016.

Taking place at Monash University’s city law chambers (555 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne), the discussion will be led by Mr Phil Doak, General Manager – People, Employment Relations & Engagement for Air New Zealand.  The discussion will focus on strategies regarding ways to enhance overall business performance, while strengthening ties that foster a collaborative workforce during the implementation of large scale change.

As Air New Zealand continues to work on long term cultural transformation for sustained competitive advantage, the award-winning company seeks a collaborative approach with their 11,000 strong work force and their eight unions.

In his role as General Manager, Mr Doak is responsible for areas such as cultural development, union relationships, collective bargaining, legal issue resolution, employee engagement as well as consulting on business issues. He notes, “At Air New Zealand, like many other industrialised businesses the tendency was to accommodate rather than collaborate with unions, and control, rather than collaborate with employees. Financial crises provide opportunities to build more sustainable relationships”.

The host is Professor Greg Bamber, Department of Management, Monash Business School. Such ideas are typical of those that are considered in Monash’s research and education, including its Masters of Human Resource Management (MHRM).
