Monash alumnus John Fraser (BEc(Hons) 1973, HonLLD 2013) has been appointed the 17th Secretary to the Australian Treasury by Governor-General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd).

The current Chairman of UBS Global Asset Management, Mr Fraser will return to Australia from the UK to take up the five-year appointment on 15 January 2015. One of his key priorities will be a review of the Treasury Department's resources and capabilities.

Mr Fraser has had a distinguished career in both the public and private sectors including previous roles within the Australian Treasury.

After graduating from Monash with a first class honours degree in Economics, he held two international postings to Washington DC, firstly at the International Monetary Fund and then as Economic Minister at the Australian embassy.

In the early 1990s he advised the Federal Government on macroeconomic policy as the Treasury’s Deputy Secretary.

In 1993 Mr Fraser joined the UBS Group in Australia and was named Head of Asia Pacific in 1999.

In 1994 he took on the role of Executive Chairman and CEO of Swiss Bank Corporation's division SBC Australia Funds Management Ltd.

He then became the global CEO and Chairman of UBS Global Asset Management, overseeing operations in 24 countries.

In 2013 he retired as the company’s CEO, retaining his Chairman position.

Mr Fraser is a former director of the Australian Stock Exchange and has chaired the Victorian Funds Management Corporation, which manages $45 billion worth of assets, since 2009.
