Members of the Monash University community are among the 22 outstanding women inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women this year.

Victorian Minister for Women, Fiona Richardson announced the 2015 inductees at a special ceremony at Federation Square on 11 March.

“The Victorian Honour Roll of Women formally acknowledges the women who have worked hard to make our society stronger, fairer and better,” she said.

“This year, we honour 22 women who have helped shape our state. By celebrating their work, we’re sending a powerful message about gender equality.”

Among those recognised are alumna, Professor Christina Mitchell (PhD Med 1988) who was honoured for her leadership as the Dean of the Monash Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

Alumna and Monash researcher Dr Jacqueline Boyle (MBBS 1989) has been recognised for her work to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and refugee women.

A champion for women during her time in the Victorian parliament, alumna Mrs Lorraine Elliott AM (BEd 1984) was posthumously added to the roll in honour of her role as a mentor to women and focus on the provision of quality child care, health care and education.

Former Head of the Department of Nursing and Midwifery at RMIT University, and the first Professor of Transcultural Nursing, Professor Olga Kanitsaki AM (MEdSt 1990) was added to the roll in recognition of her efforts to establish a more culturally-responsive health care system in Victoria.

The Victorian Honour Roll of Women began in 2001 and includes more than 500 inductees. Each year, the Roll acknowledges and pays tribute to women from across Victoria who have succeeded through vision, leadership, commitment and hard work. It is a reminder of the significant contribution women have made to Victoria.
