Graduates are Cambridge bound
Four Monash University graduates have been awarded prestigious Cambridge Australia Scholarships.
The scholarships will allow the students to undertake postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge in England.
A passionate development practitioner working in the field of sexual and reproductive health rights, Arts graduate Milena Bacalja Perianes (BA 2008) was awarded the Patrick Moore Cambridge Australia Scholarship to undertake a Master of Philosophy in multi-disciplinary gender studies.
Her research will explore the gender dynamics of initiation ceremonies for adolescent girls in Malawi and how this impacts on sexual and reproductive health decision making. She hopes this research will inform global policy that protects the health rights of woman in developing countries. Ms Bacalja is currently working for not-for-profit organisation, Simavi in the Netherlands.
Arts/Law alumnus Charles Noonan (BA 2013, LLB(Hons) 2013) received the Cambridge Australia Allen Scholarship to complete a Master of Law.
An Associate to the Hon. Justice Bernard Murphy (BJuris 1979, LLB 1979) at Federal Court of Australia, Mr Noonan will explore legal theory and legal philosophy during his studies.
Fellow Arts/Law graduate Andrew Roe (BA 2013, LLB(Hons) 2013) was awarded the Patrick Moore Cambridge Australia Scholarship to undertake a Master of Law.
His research will draw on approaches taken in other jurisdictions to investigate whether a new comprehensive framework would better protect the rights of vulnerable groups such as asylum seekers and Indigenous Australians.
A former Associate to the Hon. Justice Susan Crennan AC at the High Court of Australia, Mr Roe is currently working as a solicitor at King & Wood Mallesons.
Science graduate and budding physicist Mithuna Yoganathan (BSc(Hons) 2015) received the Cambridge Australia Allen Scholarship to study a Master in Applied Mathematics.
Her research will focus on gaining exposure to a wide array of techniques and ideas before she undertakes further specialisation in physics. Her long-term goal is to become a researcher and lecturer in quantum mechanics.
In collaboration with The Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust, Cambridge Australia Scholarships awards up to 10 PhD scholarships and a number of Masters degree half-scholarships each year.
More than 1000 Australians have been supported by Cambridge Australia Scholarships since establishment in the 1980s.
