Hong Kong alumni have established a scholarship that will enable a Hong Kong student to undertake a life changing educational experience at Monash University in Melbourne.

A group of alumni joined Professor Margaret Gardner AO, President and Vice-Chancellor, in Hong Kong on 25 November to launch the Hong Kong Alumni Scholarship. This comprehensive scholarship will provide a bright but disadvantaged student from Hong Kong the opportunity undertake an undergraduate degree at Monash University in Melbourne.

The scholarship is an initiative of Monash University’s Global Leaders Network. The network aims to build active communities of alumni in eight priority locations where there is a significant alumni presence – Hong Kong, Indonesia, mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia.

These groups work with the University to develop opportunities to enhance the student experience and strengthen alumni networks.

The group of alumni in Hong Kong have led the way with the creation of this scholarship.

“I am delighted to be a supporter of the Hong Kong Alumni Scholarship. It is a wonderful way for me to provide a life-changing educational experience to a fellow resident of Hong Kong and give back to a community that has been so supportive of me in my career,” said The Honourable Mr Justice Kevin Zervos SC.

“Coming from Asia to study at Monash taught us to grow by embracing and welcoming change. This openness and willingness to learn has served us well in our careers as we have lived, worked and raised our family in different countries and cities around the world. By supporting this scholarship, we hope to provide this positive, life-affirming experience to a future Monash University student,” said Mr Wai-Kwong Seck and Ms Lye Kean Seck.

Hong Kong based alumni also attended a reception hosted by Professor Gardner on 26 November. This was a chance for many alumni to reconnect and reminisce about their days at Monash. With almost 9000 Monash alumni based in Hong Kong, there is great potential to build a community of like-minded individuals that works together to make a difference for fellow alumni and current Monash students.

“By providing practical support, advice and opportunities to our students, we can inspire our future leaders to reach their full potential and to think and act globally for the betterment of mankind,” said Professor Gardner.
