Monash Chancellor and alumnus Dr Alan Finkel AO (BE 1976, PhD 1981) is among 50 Monash alumni, staff and supporters recognised in the 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours list.

A respected engineer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Dr Finkel received an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of his distinguished service to science and engineering and to tertiary education administration. The honour also highlights the contribution he has made to philanthropy and as an advocate for the protection of children.

Monash Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Edwina Cornish AO received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in recognition of the key stages of her career – her leadership in higher education, her leadership in biotechnology and horticultural research, and her work with government, industry and the community.

Chief Executive of CSIRO and alumna Dr Megan Clark AC (HonLLD 2013) was honoured with a Companion of the Order of Australia for her service to scientific research and development through fostering innovation, to science administration through strategic leadership roles, and to the development of public policy for technological sciences.

Fellow Monash community members Professor Paul Grabowsky AO, Dr Lesley Boston AO, Associate Professor Rosemary Sheehan AM, and Emeritus Professor Alan Lindsay AM have also been recognised for their extraordinary contributions to Australian communities in the 2014 Honours List.

Professor Grabowsky AO, Executive Director of the Monash Academy of Performing Arts and world-renowned Australian pianist, jazz musician, conductor and composer, was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to music as a performer, composer, educator and mentor, and through significant contributions to the arts as an administrator.

Former Monash Council member and alumna Dr Lesley Boston AO (HonLLD 2014) was appointed an AO for her distinguished service to education as an advocate for improved opportunities for young women, to innovative and best practice pedagogy, and to professional development.

Queen's Birthday Honours also went to:

• Science alumnus Dr Gary Speck AM (BSc 1973, MBBS 1974) received a Member of the Order of Australia ‘for significant service to medicine as an orthopaedic surgeon, and to professional organisations’.

• Alumnus, Monash staff member and supporter Professor Paul Komesaroff AM (BSc(Hons) 1974) received a Member of the Order of Australia ‘for significant service to ethics in medicine as a physician, researcher and philosopher’.

• Alumna Mrs Toni McCormack OAM (MA 1994) received a Medal of the Order of Australia ‘for service to the community through local government, transport and volunteer organisations’.

• Alumna and former Monash staff member Professor Barbara Caine AM (PhD History 2006) received a Member of the Order of Australia ‘for significant service to tertiary education, particularly to gender studies, to women's history, and as a role model and mentor’.

• Alumnus Emeritus Professor Ross Fitzgerald AM (BA (Hons) 1967) received a Member of the Order of Australia ‘for significant service to education in the field of politics and history as an academic, and to community and public health organisations’.
