Update from the Executive Director
Update from the Executive Director
May is an important month in the Monash calendar as we celebrate with our new alumni, their family and friends for two weeks of graduation ceremonies at our Clayton campus.
This edition of Alumni News highlights Monash’s world-leading research. Hear about the Wellcome Trust and the Asian Development Bank funded Revitalising Urban Slums Project from project lead and Monash alumna, Professor Rebekah Brown, which is transforming the living conditions of some of the world’s most at-risk populations.
As part of our continuing focus on engaging our global alumni community, President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, made her first official visit to Indonesia last month to meet with Indonesian based alumni.
The Global Discovery Program is now in its third year. Driven and funded by our US based alumni, the program sends Monash students on a once in a lifetime trip to meet and learn from some of Monash University’s most notable alumni. Following on from the great success of the inaugural London program in February and previous Global Discovery Programs in New York in 2015 and 2016, applications recently closed for the 2017 New York program. We look forward to updating you with the successful students’ journey through the city that never sleeps.
Keeping your skills up to date is more important than ever in today’s workplace and we are making this easier with the launch of our new online hub for Monash professional development courses. Course options range from one day masterclasses to executive courses and individually tailored programs. I encourage you to find out more about these opportunities to further your learning.
Our Alumni Outreach Program is in full swing and the generous contributions of our alumni are having real world impact on the lives of our students, their families and the broader community. I want to thank everyone who has contributed so far and share with you the impact your support has. You can hear from Achieving Potential scholar, Namik Perera, about how a Monash scholarship has helped him reach his full potential.
Finally, I’d like to highlight two events that we’ve been privileged to host this month. The Matheson Society, which celebrates and recognises those who have made the generous decision to leave a gift in their will to Monash, was delighted to hear from Emeritus Professor Graeme Davison AO at their annual luncheon hosted by Monash President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner AO.
The first of the Alumni Speaker Series for 2017 saw lauded World War One historian and Monash Chair of History and Australian Studies and Monash alumnus, Professor Bruce Scates, challenge the idolised memory of the ANZAC legend while questioning the treatment of our returned war personnel in an engaging and emotional address.
I hope you can join us and your fellow alumni at our events and activities throughout the rest of the year. Watch your inbox for your personalised invitations.
