If you are unable to start by the date indicated in your offer letter, you may apply to change your commencement date. The request to change your commencement date must be lodged before your original commencement date. When applying to change your commencement date, you will need to be mindful of the Faculty's preferred commencement dates.
An admission offer (without a Monash scholarship) can be deferred for a maximum period of 12 months in total, from the initial commencement date. Deferral requests for scholarship and/or admission are granted on a case-by-case basis. Monash makes no guarantee that a further offer will be made.

If your first language is not English, your English Language Proficiency (ELP) must be satisfied in one of the following ways:

For an English language test to satisfy the ELP requirements for Admission or scholarship, it must be taken at an official test centre within two years of the proposed course enrolment commencement date. Your campus location depends on your Department. Your Department will allocate you to a desk space once you have enrolled into the program, and advise you on your campus location.
The academic unit and the delegate of the Graduate Research Committee need to be satisfied that prospective and current students have sufficient time available during the week to devote to their research, as well as complete any mandatory program requirements, and participate in relevant academic activities.
International students on Australian student visas must enrol on a full-time basis unless there are compassionate or compelling circumstances.

The Australian government's Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset covers graduate research course fees if you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident, for the specified duration of your course.

Yes, many of our PhD candidates travel during their degree. This includes attending conferences, collecting data and visiting other institutions. To travel as a student, you need to apply for Study Away.
Study Away includes travel grants. These grants are available from the University to assist with expenses. Some funding may also be available from your department or through faculty travel schemes. For information about additional funding, speak with your department’s Graduate Research Program Director.
Milestones are designed to support a student's progress towards successful completion of their thesis. Milestones provide students with an opportunity to receive structured feedback on their progress to date. There are three milestones:

As a PhD student, you are entitled to a range of leave options, including Annual Leave, Sick Leave, Parental Leave, and others. All types of leave should be discussed with your main supervisor, and most require formal approval.
If you receive a scholarship, some types of leave may be eligible for paid leave.
Yes, students can add a new supervisor or change supervisors throughout their candidature. Changes in supervisory arrangements should be discussed with your supervisory team and your department’s Graduate Research Program Director.
Each department provides resources to their research students for the duration of their candidature, including desk space and computer facilities. For details on specific resources and any attached conditions, please speak with your Department Manager.
Yes, you can work while studying. For a full time student, employment must not interfere with the requirement to dedicate at least 4 days a week (over a 7-day calendar week) (pro-rata part-time students, 2 days), during normal business hours on each of those days, to the pursuit of their study program.
