A PhD in Business and Economics enables you to complete extensive, independent research on an agreed topic under the supervision of at least two expert academics. Your study will culminate in a written thesis or alternative approved output, which offers a significant contribution to the current body of knowledge in your chosen research area. A range of staff and services will be available to support you throughout your degree to enable you to be job-ready and make an impact in academia, industry, government or the wider community.
Undertaking a PhD is a chance to push the boundaries of contemporary business practice and have a hand in solving some of the biggest challenges facing industry today.
You will be supported by a minimum of two supervisors throughout your enrolment, both of whom are committed to your success.
Depending on your focus, you will be assigned to one of the following disciplines: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Law and Taxation, Health Economics, Econometrics and Business Statistics, Economics, Management, Marketing or Interdisciplinary.

The principal component of the PhD is a major research thesis of up to 80,000 words (or alternative approved outputs). A PhD may be undertaken in the principal areas of research offered, including:
- Accounting
- Banking and Finance
- Business Law and Taxation
- Health Economics
- Econometrics and Business Statistics
- Economics
- Management
- Marketing
- Interdisciplinary
The course consists of:
- a research and thesis component
- a coursework study program - applicable only to Business Law and Taxation and Monash University Malaysia.
Note: At Monash University Malaysia and Indonesia, only the following programs are available: Accounting, Business Law and Taxation, Management, Marketing, and Interdisciplinary PhD programs.
*All students enrolled in the Business Law and Taxation PhD program are required to complete and pass two coursework units or one double-weighted coursework unit.
All students enrolled at Monash University Malaysia are required to complete and pass one coursework unit, the assessment of which is conducted in accordance with the University's Assessment in Coursework Units policy and supporting procedures. It is recommended that the unit be completed prior to confirmation.
Students may apply to take a research internship unit (BEX6099) as an elective unit within the first 3.5 years of candidature, and with the approval of their Supervisor, Program Director and Faculty. The research internship unit would normally be taken after confirmation of candidature.
