Advancing skills in Paediatric Physiotherapy - Cerebral Palsy - PDM1056

Participants will gain knowledge and practical skills in managing cerebral palsy, including understanding the aetiology and epidemiology, risk factors, standardised outcome measures, and hip surveillance protocols.

Participants will also explore the different movement disorders seen in cerebral palsy, evidence-based therapy interventions, gait correction, medical interventions, and equipment prescription. The importance of lifespan care, and transition complexities as the adolescent moves to adulthood will also be highlighted.

Who should attend

Physiotherapists who have some experience working in the area of paediatrics and is targeted at a more advanced level of practice.

NB: This course is not available to non- physiotherapists. *This course is only available to participants who have previously completed the introductory course: ‘Enhancing skills in paediatric physiotherapy’ or obtained an exemption by submitting a one page CV to med.physioshortcourses@monash.edu outlining clinical practice experience and professional development undertaken in paediatrics since graduation.

While we welcome the participation of qualified international physiotherapists, please be mindful of the following points before you register:

  • For all Monash University physiotherapy courses, including short courses, you must meet the minimum English language requirements which is the equivalent International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 7.0 (no band lower than 6.5).
  • The courses have been developed for the Australian context and may or may not be relevant to international settings.

What you will learn

At the completion of this course it is expected the participant will be able to:

  • Describe relevant embryology in regards to the timing of cerebral insults that result in a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.
  • Demonstrate an understanding the common risk factors that lead to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.
  • Be able to identify and select appropriate outcome measures for children with cerebral palsy across the age span.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of hip surveillance requirements in cerebral palsy and how the management differs.
  • Identify and understand the principles of management of different movement disorders.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of burst versus ongoing therapy prescription.
  • Apply the principles of advanced gait correction via orthotic prescription with the use of cases to illustrate.
  • Understand the rationale for the timing of medical interventions eg. Medications, Botox, SDR, ITB, surgery.
  • Understand the complexity in equipment prescription in cerebral palsy across the lifespan.
  • Describe the complexities around transition from paediatric to adult services.
  • Tailor outcome measurement for different ages based on the ICF.

Program structure

An Australian entry to practice degree in physiotherapy or equivalent for international students. Each online paediatric short course contributes to an estimated 40 hours of professional development.

This course consists of asynchronous online learning over four weeks, with a live interactive online learning day following completion of the initial four weeks of the program. Assessment tasks are time-sensitive to ensure the work is evenly paced throughout the course. Course content will be available during O-Week, and students will be required to log in and complete preparation tasks the week prior to commencement. This course runs for four consecutive weeks unless the dates run over a Monash University mid semester break.

Participants who cancel 4 weeks prior to course commencement will be entitled to a refund, less a $100 administration fee.

Participants that cancel less than 4 weeks before course commencement will be entitled to a 50% refund of the cost of the paediatric short course and after course commencement no refunds will be issued.
