A PhD in Law consists of  an extensive, independent research project on an agreed chosen topic, supported by at least two expert academic supervisors. Your study will result in a research thesis or alternative approved output, which makes an original and substantial contribution to the current body of knowledge on your chosen topic. A range of staff and services will be available to support you throughout your degree to enable you to be job-ready and make an impact in academia, industry, government or the wider community.

A PhD in Law requires you to complete a research thesis of up to 80,000 words (or alternative approved outputs), which must be of a standard comparable to the legal writings found in scholarly law journals. The thesis must demonstrate an ability to undertake independent research and to critically reflect on, analyse and synthesise legal concepts.

As well as the research component, you have access to a selection of research, teaching, professional, innovation and career-related development workshops and seminars designed to better establish students as researchers, and give Monash graduate researchers a competitive edge when it comes to employment opportunities.  Students are expected to participate in activities which are offered by the Faculty of Law and these are notified to students directly.

Fees

Research Training Program (RTP)

This course is supported by the Australian government's Research Training Program (RTP). Under the RTP, domestic students are awarded an RTP Fees Offset which covers the cost of course tuition fees. The estimated annual value of Australian Government support for an RTP Fees Offset is published on the University Graduate Research Scholarships website. The RTP Fees Offset duration is equivalent to the course duration, based on your commencement date and no more than 4 years (FTE) for students enrolled in Doctoral courses and no more than 2 years (FTE) for students enrolled in research Masters courses.
