Professional entry master's degree

This course integrates advanced practitioner training with industry-based research training to prepare you for work as a Clinical Psychologist. Clinical Psychologists use their knowledge of psychology and mental health for the assessment, diagnosis, formulation, treatment and prevention of psychological problems and mental illness across the lifespan.

The course is founded on a commitment to excellence in clinical training and clinical research that can positively impact the brain and mental health of the community. You will gain generalised and specialised clinical skills to manage complex mental health problems, that is culturally responsive, in order to help people thrive. You will learn from passionate clinical educators through coursework and expert clinical supervisors across three placements. You will also conduct a clinical research project that has scope to positively impact the community under the guidance of experienced academics.

This course is 2 years of study that represents the fifth and sixth year of study in Psychology.

Entry Requirements

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.

Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

Qualifications

Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)-accredited four-year sequence in psychology as part of an embedded Honours degree (or equivalent*) with an overall average of 80%.

OR

An APAC-accredited four-year sequence comprising:

a three-year undergraduate major in psychology (or equivalent*) with an average of 80%, and a fourth-year Honours specialisation in psychology (or equivalent*) with an average of 80%

*Equivalent: a qualification obtained from an overseas education institution that has been assessed as comparable to an APAC-accredited qualification in psychology or an APAC-accredited sequence in psychology, by an appropriate authority.

Applicants who have not completed a four-year bachelor degree, or equivalent, within the last three years will be required to demonstrate how they have maintained up-to-date knowledge and skills in the area of Psychology since completion of their four-year bachelor degree, or equivalent.

As the Master of Clinical Psychology includes a component of direct client activities, all students are required to be provisionally or generally registered as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) for the duration of the course. You need to apply for provisional registration after you have enrolled in your postgraduate degree and before you start your coursework.

English requirements

Applicants must also meet the English language requirements.

As students need to be provisionally or generally registered as a psychologist on commencement of the course, you must also be able to meet the mandatory AHPRA English language skills registration standard.

A: Two Referee Reports

You must arrange two confidential referee forms to be completed by academic and/or professional referees (ie. a person such as an employer who has known you in a context other than the academic context).

B: Video Statement (Preliminary short-listed applicants only)

We ask that you prepare a video statement that outlines your vision for your career as a clinical psychologist. Most of our previously successful applicants had a strong academic record and some practical experience or volunteer work experience related to clinical practice.

Your video statement (about 700 words) should briefly discuss: 1) your prior experience and training, and how they contribute to your being a strong candidate for the program; 2) your goals for postgraduate study; 3) your career goals, including clinical practice, community engagement, and clinical research, and how they align with one or more members of our staff; and 4) and if you completed a four-year bachelor degree, or equivalent, more than three years ago, show how you have maintained up-to-date knowledge and skills in the area of Psychology.

In accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council recommendations, this course requires that you comply with the faculty's Mandatory Compliance requirements regarding immunisation and vaccination. These requirements are designed to provide maximum protection against the increased risk of some vaccine preventable diseases for students, patients and workers in health care settings.

To complete your course, you are required to demonstrate that you meet fitness for practice expectations.

Student registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra)

Under the National Law, all students enrolled in an approved program of study, or who are undertaking clinical training in a health profession, must be registered as a student with their respective National Board by the education provider. Students do not need to apply for registration.

Please note: In order to protect the public from the risk of harm, the National Law defines legal requirements for mandatory reporting of health practitioners and Ahpra registered health practitioner students. Practitioners and education providers are mandated by law to report notifiable issues relating to students. The National Law also provides limited circumstances for a voluntary notification about students.
