Barkly Square, the nearest main shopping centre, is just a 15-minute walk away in Brunswick and has a great community feel. The centre features supermarkets, department stores, and a number of shops specialising in everything from produce to fashion.

Bustling Sydney Road is one of the Southern Hemisphere's longest retail strips and a mecca for Mediterranean food. Savour the delights of Middle Eastern bakeries or stock up on pasta, porcini, and delicious cheeses and salami at one of the street's popular grocers.

A little further east, Lygon Street in Carlton offers a great range of bookshops and music stores, and is a focal point of Melbourne's arts and literary scene. Further east is Fitzroy's bohemian Brunswick Street, where you can spend hours exploring the fringe art galleries.

Easily accessible by bus or tram from the Parkville campus, the historic and vibrant Queen Victoria Market offers everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, meats and cheeses, local and imported gourmet foods, to cosmetics, clothing and souvenirs.

Parkville is bordered by Royal Park, the largest of Melbourne's inner-city parks. The wide-open spaces include native bushland, wetlands, an Australian native garden, and an extensive network of walking and bicycle tracks.

Royal Park is home to the Royal Melbourne Zoo, which houses hundreds of animal species from Australia and around the world. The Zoo also hosts live music in the evenings during summer.

For history and culture lovers, the Melbourne Museum is located in the very pretty Carlton Gardens. While there, you may want to visit the cinema next door, which contains the world's third largest IMAX 3D screen. Other cinemas in the area also screen new-release art-house films, world films and selected commercial films.

The lively inner-city suburbs of Fitzroy, Collingwood and Brunswick are very popular at night, as is the city, a short tram ride away. Clubs, pubs and wine bar bars abound, and there are some great venues for jazz and salsa.

Eating out

The area surrounding the Parkville campus is a food lover's paradise. Lygon Street has one of the largest selections of Italian restaurants, pizzeria and cafes in Australia. This tree-lined street offers the quintessential alfresco dining experience. For those with a sweet tooth, most of the cafes also offer a wide assortment of cakes and desserts.

If Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours take your fancy, Brunswick is the place to be. Savour modern eastern delicacies at a range of popular Turkish and Lebanese restaurants, or if your budget stretches to it, try the banquet at a Greek taverna.

On Brunswick Street in Fitzroy and Smith Street in Collingwood you can sit down for a bite at one of the many colourful cafes, or lunch at one of Melbourne's best gastro pubs or cheap eateries. There are also some great organic vegetarian restaurants, hamburger joints, souvlaki cafes and tapas bars.
