Art History and Curating - F2021
You’ll develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of historical and contemporary movements as well as different geographies and cultures in art history, and build on your knowledge of artworks and artists. You’ll learn about the origins of art and explore many different periods, such as the Italian Renaissance to Baroque, modern and contemporary Australian, Asian and international art, the history and theory of photography, film and video, Indigenous Australian creative practice and ways of knowing, and more. Throughout this study, you'll develop a broad base of knowledge that sets you up for a career in Australia or anywhere around the world.
In the practical components of this course, you’ll be able to apply your knowledge to develop exhibition concepts for a range of cultural settings, including museums, galleries and site-specific exhibitions. You’ll get hands-on experience developing an exhibition concept as well as internship opportunities in the museum and gallery sector that will develop your curating skills in a real work environment and grow your professional network while you study. You’ll also have the opportunity to experiment with creative practices through electives, enriching your understanding of the practice of art.
You’ll also get to explore the various registers, genres and venues in which the discussion of art is carried out – from academic journals, magazines, newspapers and online – giving you the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in writing about art for diverse audiences.
Be part of our creative hub
You’ll be part of the creative community at Caulfield campus, a creative hub with a rich history going back over a century. You’ll share spaces with artists, art writers, art historians, printmakers, painters, photographers, designers and more – providing the perfect environment to spark ideas and build your creative network.
You’ll have access to a range of galleries on campus, such as MADA Gallery, the student-run Intermission Gallery – where you can experiment and test out your exhibition ideas – and the nationally significant Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), where you’ll engage with a broad range of artists, curators, exhibitions and the MUMA collection.
Internships
You’ll undertake a curatorial internship of 80–100 hours in your final year in a creative workplace that aligns with your area of interest giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in the art world. Previous internships have been at Caves Gallery, Gertrude Contemporary, Neon Parc, Artsbus, MPavilion, Open House Melbourne, Liquid Architecture, STATION and many more.
Travel abroad
You’ll also have the opportunity to take an immersive study semester at the
Monash University Prato Centre, set in the heritage-listed Palazzo Vaj in the historic centre of Prato, Italy, as well as overseas travel to locations in Australia and around the world. Travelling with staff and fellow students in small groups, you’ll follow a set curriculum working on industry projects and visiting partner institutions to enrich your learning experience.

You’ll graduate from our Bachelor of Art History and Curating with the ability to have an influential career as a curator, arts media commentator, museum director, gallery owner, arts programmer, arts collection manager, conservator, archivist, museum or gallery education officer, arts administrator, arts historian and researcher. Our graduates have gone on to work in diverse roles at MUMA, NGV, Neon Park, Biennale of Sydney, West Space, MPavilion, The Other Art Fair, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and many more.

Double degrees

All domestic applicants must: 1. Apply via VTAC 2. Selection is ATAR/GPA based; no additional entry requirements.
Partner with another course
Double degree courses allow you to study towards two different degrees at the same time, and graduate with two separate qualifications. And because a required subject in one course can count as an elective in the other, our double degrees take up to two years less than if you studied for the two degrees separately.

You may apply to transfer from another Monash course. Transfers are a competitive process. You may apply mid-year for available courses however consideration will be given as to whether you will be able to follow your course progression.
