It is the University’s expectation that only those who are well and not presenting with COVID-19 symptoms attend a Monash campus or location. View our latest updates.
For entry to Monash University, you must meet the minimum English language requirements. You can do this by completing one of the qualifications listed.
If you've completed several measures of English proficiency over a period of time, the highest valid measure will be accepted as long as it's been taken within the required time limitations.
English-speaking background or education
You can meet the English language requirements through any of the ways listed below if you've completed at least six years of schooling in an English medium institution in an English-speaking country prior to the age of 19.
Due to the impacts of COVID-19, for admission to the University in 2021 and 2022 applicants who took VCE English as an Additional Language (EAL) and have a minimum EAL score of 27 can receive an adjustment of three points to their achieved EAL score. Additional language support is provided to students admitted with an adjustment to their EAL score.
You need satisfactory completion of one of the following:
the equivalent of an Australian VET Certificate IV course (AQF Level 4), or higher, that has been approved by the faculty as requiring sufficient English skills
study in an English medium educational institution equivalent to at least 24 Monash credit points (one semester of full-time study) at Australian VET diploma level (AQF Level 5) or higher
at least two units of higher education study (to a minimum 12 points), of which at least one is an English-rich unit, taken as part of an award or non-award course
an Australian masters by research or doctoral degree, or equivalent, from an English medium institution.
The University does not accept competency-based qualifications as meeting English language requirements.
English language preparatory courses aren't normally accepted for applicants whose secondary schooling was taught entirely in English, and are subject to faculty approval on a case-by-case basis.
If you apply to an Australian campus and meet all the admission requirements except the English standard, you may be asked to sit an internal assessment or test (e.g. STAT English) to demonstrate your English proficiency. This requires approval from the faculty dean and the University.
Non-English-speaking background or education
You can meet the English language requirements through any of the ways listed below if you haven't completed at least six years of schooling in an English medium institution in an English-speaking country prior to the age of 19.
Time limits may apply to the evidence you provide to demonstrate your English language proficiency.

Cambridge Linguaskill General (an online test Monash is accepting for courses with a Monash English Language Level of A and B only on a trial basis while other approved English test centres are closed).
If you’re located outside of China, you won’t be able to register for the test with Monash University.
If you’ve already completed the test within the last three years, you can send through the official test report with your application for us to consider.
You can complete the Cambridge Linguaskill General tests for reading, listening, writing and speaking as many times as you need to meet our English entry requirements (just make sure you complete the tests within the time limit in section 3.11 of the Admission to Coursework Courses and Units Procedure (pdf)).
Time limits on English language measures
Time limits apply when an applicant has not completed at least six years of schooling in an English medium institution in an English-speaking country prior to the age of 19.
The default time limit is three years from the date the English language measure was completed until the course commencement date. Some qualifications or duration of study may have longer validity.
