Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

The ATAR is a ranking (ranging from 0.00 to 99.95) that shows how you performed academically compared to all other Year 12 students in Australia.

In Victoria, the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) calculates your ATAR once you’ve completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and are eligible for an ATAR.

Entry requirements

ATAR requirements differ between courses. To find what ATAR you need to get for the courses you’re interested in, check our find a course page and VTAC's CourseSearch tool. Each course page includes the lowest selection rank you would have needed in the previous year or intake. The cut-off can change year-to-year, but this gives you an idea of what you’ll need to get into the course.

Courses without a published ATAR

Not all courses have a lowest selection rank published in their selection criteria, but we’ll still consider your ATAR (as well as prerequisites and other additional requirements).

If a course you’re looking at doesn’t mention a specific ATAR it could be because:

  • the course selects students based on a range of criteria besides the ATAR (such as personal statements, folios, interviews, auditions or supplementary information forms)
  • the course is new and a lowest selection rank isn’t available from the previous year
  • less than five offers are made for that course every year.

If you’re applying for a double degree without a published ATAR, look at the individual ATAR published for each single degree – the highest ATAR of the two should give you a general idea of the ranking you need.

Adjustments factors and entry schemes

You might be eligible for a range of adjustment factors or entry schemes based on your circumstances. To be considered, you’ll have to:

  1. Apply to Monash through VTAC.
  2. Complete an equity scheme (formerly SEAS) application.

Once you’ve submitted your application, we’ll:

  1. Check if you’re eligible for Monash Guarantee. If you are, we’ll send you an email letting you know.
  2. Consider if you’re eligible for an equity scheme (formerly SEAS), and if so, apply any adjustments you’re eligible for.
  3. Check if you’re eligible for any subject adjustments, and if so, apply any adjustments you’re eligible for.

You may be eligible for more than one entry scheme or adjustment factor. We’ll apply all the adjustments you’re eligible for.

Scholarships

If you’re a domestic year 12 applicant (and you’re applying through VTAC), you’ll automatically be considered for our scholarships based on your ATAR. For most merit scholarships, you need a minimum ATAR ranking of 98.

If you fall within one of our defined equity or personal disadvantage groups, you'll also be assessed for an equity scholarship based on your equity scheme (formerly SEAS) application.

You can browse our available scholarships on our find a scholarship page.

Didn’t get the ATAR you were expecting?

It's still worth listing the course you want as a preference if there isn't a big difference between your ATAR and the previous year's lowest ATAR and selection rank.

If you don’t end up getting in, don’t worry – you may be able to take a pathway program to get into Monash. There are several different pathway programs, including completing a diploma or TAFE qualification. They are made to help you get into your desired course if you weren’t eligible for direct entry.

If you’re looking into other pathways and need some help, you can message us through MoVA or contact Monash Connect.
