Stand Together: A Bullying Prevention Short Course - PDD1099

This professional development program is designed to build safer, more inclusive school communities by reducing bullying through education, awareness, and collaboration.

Grounded in current research on bullying prevention, the program equips teachers, school leaders and wellbeing staff with practical strategies to identify, address, and prevent bullying behaviours.

This program does not require prior study.

What you will learn

Module 1: Understanding Bullying

  • Define the various forms of bullying and differentiate them from other aggressive behaviours.
  • Describe the different types of bullying, including physical (such as hitting and pushing), verbal (such as name-calling and threats), emotional (such as marginalisation and emotional manipulation), and cyberbullying (harassment occurring through digital platforms
  • Identify various indicators that a student may be experiencing bullying, such as changes in behaviour or academic performance.
Module 2: The Role of Teachers in Bullying Prevention
  • Evaluate, integrate, and apply relevant evidence-based research to develop a school action plan that addresses the short- and long-term effects of bullying on all parties involved: victims, perpetrators, and bystanders, by fostering a more empathetic approach to intervention.
  • Examine the key responsibilities of teachers in fostering a proactive anti-bullying environment.
Module 3: Building Empathy and Understanding
  • Acquire knowledge on fostering a culture of respect and safety in classrooms, empowering educators to intervene effectively during incidents of bullying.
  • Create inclusive classrooms by learning evidence-based strategies that prioritise inclusion and safety. This includes establishing clear behavioural expectations and implementing restorative practices that promote reconciliation and understanding.

Module 4: Implementing Anti-bullying Policies

  • Synthesise and evaluate research that shows how fostering students' emotional intelligence can promote more compassionate behaviours. Participants will explore a variety of practical methods and activities designed to teach empathy and social-emotional skills. These will include structured discussions and collaborative projects. They will also be encouraged to incorporate these practices into their existing curriculum.
  • Design and develop effective anti-bullying policies, focusing on evidence-based practices that are grounded in the latest research on bullying prevention.
  • Acquire a knowledge base of the legal frameworks and ethical responsibilities surrounding bullying prevention, enabling them to navigate these complexities when developing and implementing school policies.
  • Evacuate and assess an evidence-informed knowledge base of developing and implementing effective anti-bullying policies within their own educational settings.
Module 5: Engaging Students and Parents
  • Evaluation and assess an evidence-informed knowledge base of developing and implementing effective anti-bullying policies within their own educational settings.
  • Develop skills to promote open communication and awareness of bullying prevention measures, fostering a supportive school community.
Module 6: Monitoring, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement
  • Assess the effectiveness of existing anti-bullying initiatives and identify areas for improvement.
  • Create a comprehensive plan for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of their anti-bullying strategies, ensuring adaptability and responsiveness to student needs.

Program Structure

Self-paced online learning: 12 hours, delivered across six self-paced online modules.

You will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Faculty of Education, Monash University.

You have 12 months from the date of your registration to complete this program.

Is there a specific program start date, and are there any live classes?

No, this program is conducted via self-paced online learning on our Learning Management System, so there are no live lectures or scheduled class times - you can register into this program at any stage and complete the course online at times/days that suit you and at your own pace.

Once I have registered, when will I get access to the course?

You will receive access to the Learning Management System on the same or next business day. Please note that if you register on a weekend or public holiday, you will not receive access until the next business day.

My organisation would like to pay for my registration in this course via tax invoice. How do I go about organising this?

Please email us at edu.pdp@monash.edu advising us that your organisation would like to pay for your registration via tax invoice. We will email you an application form to fill in, and you will need to complete this and return it back to us with a copy of a purchase order from your organisation for the course fees. We can then complete your enrolment and organise a tax invoice.
