Working with Adolescents: Counselling Essentials - PDD1097

When working with adolescents as a teacher, coach, confidante or mentor, you are not always prepared for the often highly sensitive nature of the information with which you are confronted. This introductory program delivers basic theory and practical counselling skills to help you meet the various mental health needs of the young people you work with.

This program aims to enhance your knowledge of adolescent development, the mental health issues facing young people today, and provide you with increased confidence to support them in your role.

This program is suitable for people working in areas such as education, community work, nursing and allied health professions, youth clubs or sporting associations or are looking to work in these areas.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate enhanced professional knowledge and understanding of adolescent social and intellectual learning, development and the challenges facing adolescents today including requirements in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
  • Use a range of basic counselling skills with young people.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of counselling theories and techniques which are effective for use with young people.
  • Understand the issues facing young people today and the risk and resilience factors in their lives.
  • Apply a practical understanding of mental health issues common in adolescents, and recognise and manage these.
  • Understand the legal and ethical issues involved counselling youth.

Recognition

On successful completion of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Faculty of Education, Monash University.

Program structure

Course length

Online program: one 2-hour online class per week over nine weeks.

Independent study

Participants will engage in approximately 10 hours of readings and activities per week throughout the program.

You will require internet access and a laptop, computer or other device that will enable you to join a virtual classroom and access an online learning portal. Your chosen device requires a camera, microphone and sound.

Facilitated by an experienced psychologist.

Assessment

Assessment tasks consist of:

  • class participation/attendance (80% attendance must be maintained)
  • Homework task
  • In-class case study

You do not need to complete any prerequisites for this program.

Please note that participants must be over 18 years of age on the start date of this program.
