Course Handbook

In this course, you will specialise in two key areas of interpreting practice: healthcare and legal settings, which include police and court interpreting. You will gain essential knowledge and specialist language specific to these fields.

You will learn about the communication styles and discourse features of the various participants that medical and legal interpreters encounter. In healthcare, this includes doctors, nurses, clinicians, mental health specialists, and patients. In legal settings, you will work with police officers, lawyers, judicial officers, prison and parole officers, as well as individuals who may lack specialised knowledge of the legal system.

The course will provide you with the opportunity to focus on both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, using English and other languages. You will explore interactional approaches to interpreting, along with theoretical concepts related to health and legal interpreting as emerging research fields.
