This microcredential focuses on teaching you how to make prescribing decisions in the context of preventative health conditions. This includes travel health, contraception, smoking cessation, and oral health. At the conclusion of this microcredential, you will be able to describe the signs, symptoms, diagnostic features and management options relevant to these conditions. You will apply your knowledge and skills using the four-step prescribing process of information gathering, clinical decision-making, communicating and documenting treatment plans and monitoring treatment responses to make person-centred evidence-informed prescribing decisions.

What you will learn

The following learning outcomes are taught and assessed in this microcredential.

  1. Describe the signs, symptoms, and diagnostic features relevant to primary care preventative health conditions including but not limited to travel health, contraception, smoking cessation, and oral health.
  2. In the context of preventative health conditions, apply the steps of the prescribing process to create person-centred and evidence-informed treatment decisions:
    1. Conduct comprehensive, culturally safe patient assessments, including basic physical examination techniques to develop a working diagnosis (where needed) and make prescribing decisions that promote person-centred care.
    2. Evaluate and apply evidence-based management options tailored to person-specific factors, ensuring alignment with clinical guidelines and therapeutic goals.
    3. Formulate, document, and communicate safe, legal, effective, and ethical treatment plans that comply with legislative requirements and codes and guidelines, and support person-centred care.
    4. Monitor and evaluate treatment outcomes, including the identification and management of adverse outcomes.
  3. In the context of preventative health conditions, prescribe medications according to established protocols, adhering to legal, ethical, and professional standards to ensure patient safety.
  4. In the context of preventative health conditions, engage people in shared decision-making, respecting their needs, preferences, and cultural considerations to foster active participation in their treatment plans.
  5. In the context of preventative health conditions, collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated, informed, and effective prescribing practices within personal scope of practice, including identifying when referral to another healthcare professional is required.

Program structure

You will complete a series of self-directed online learning assessments, engage in a series of online workshops and complete assessed simulated prescribing cases. You will be required to successfully pass an online OSCE to assess your ability to conduct a comprehensive patient assessment and make prescribing decisions in the context of simulated travel health, contraception, smoking cessation and oral health clinical cases. You will also be assessed on your ability to conduct an oral health risk assessment during an in-person workshop.
