​Too young for menopause?: An evidence-based approach to managing early menopause and premature ovarian insufficiency - PDM1177

Designed for healthcare professionals, the course supports participants to identify symptoms, distinguish management pathways, conduct relevant testing, address emotional distress, and access best-practice resources for comprehensive care.

The course is aligned with recommendations from the 2024 International Evidence-based Guideline for Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, developed through a collaboration between the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, International Menopause Society and Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation. Course facilitator Professor Amanda Vincent co-chaired the international guideline development group, which included clinical experts and women with lived experience, ensuring participants receive contemporary, globally endorsed guidance for practice.

What you will learn

At the completion of the course, you will:

  1. Identify common symptoms of early menopause and premature ovarian insufficiency.
  2. Differentiate management pathways (pharmaceutical and non‐pharmaceutical strategies).
  3. Discuss useful testing for diagnosing early menopause and premature ovarian insufficiency.
  4. Recognise emotional and psychological distress associated with early menopause and premature ovarian insufficiency and appropriate clinical management.
  5. Access best-practice guidelines and resources to support women regarding early menopause and premature ovarian insufficiency.
  6. Identify the elements of a best practice clinical environment to deliver evidence-based care for early menopause and premature ovarian insufficiency.

Program structure

Week 1:

  • What is Early Menopause? Definitions, Epidemiology, Causes and Symptoms
  • Assessment of EM and POI

Week 2:

  • Management including lifestyle, mental and sexual health and hormone replacement therapy
  • Non-hormonal options for managing EM and POI, urogenital symptoms and infertility

Clinical Associate Professor Amanda Vincent

ADJUNCT CLINICAL PROFESSOR, Monash Centre for Health Research & Implementation

Clinical Associate Professor Amanda Vincent is a clinician researcher combining clinical practice in menopause with menopause related research, translation and education. She is lead endocrinologist in the Menopause, Early menopause and Menopause Oncology clinics at Monash Health, Clayton, Victoria, Australia.

With over 20 years’ experience providing clinical care and educating undergraduate medical students and post-graduate trainees in menopause management.

She is Head of Early Menopause Research at Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation & Monash University. She co-leads the Early menopause stream for the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Women’s Health in Reproductive life. Has publications and successful grant funding in projects related to early menopause research, bone health, consumer and health professional education including the Healthtalk Australia Early menopause digital resource and Ask Early menopause App.
