Why study a Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Fine Art at Monash?

The challenges facing our society are a call to action for all creatives, who can respond to the complexity of contemporary global society, where vision, originality and impact are essential requirements.

By blending your design studies with a degree in fine art at Monash you’ll gain the knowledge, skills and capability to develop imaginative and effective solutions and design new possibilities.

With a shared creative foundation, this unique degree combination will help you develop an understanding of visual language, symbolism, narrative and critical cultural engagement - skills that deepen the meaning behind design work. You’ll also be trained in methodology, design thinking, creative production, research and prototyping, which are essential skills for translating artistic vision into functional, user-focused solutions.

Both the Bachelor of Design and the Bachelor of Fine Art are taught at Monash University’s Caulfield Campus. Home to Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA) you’ll be immersed in a creative community that encourages experimentation and collaboration.

The majority of your studies will take place in a studio environment, where you will learn through hands-on making and designing - either in dedicated fine art studio spaces, or design studios which simulate the way many design agencies operate.

With purpose-built facilities and dedicated workshops with supportive technical staff, we connect you with the resources, professional practice, expert industry knowledge, and a dynamic creative community to ensure you are set up for success after you graduate.

You’ll be able to choose from four specialisations in the Bachelor of Design:

  • Collaborative Design
  • Communication Design
  • Industrial Design
  • Spatial Design

In the final year of your double degree you will undertake a capstone unit bringing your two chosen areas of study together in a unique applied project.

Where will the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Fine Art take you?

Whether you wish to pursue a career as an artist or as a designer, this double degree will prepare you for an exciting future in the creative industries, where originality and impact are essential requirements. We’ll train you to think in future-oriented ways and give you the confidence to engage with and respond to the cultural, technological, and environmental challenges of our time.

Graduating with a double degree in Design and Fine Art will give you a distinctive edge. You’ll be equipped to work in creative direction and branding; public art and spatial design; UX/UI and human-centred design; product design; or to run your own independent art practice with applied design acumen. You’ll also stand out in emerging and hybrid fields that value both critical reflection and practical innovation.
