At the core of the Doctor of Philosophy (Practice-based) is the Arts Advantage PhD program. This consists of an extensive, independent research project including creative outputs and written work supported by at least two expert academic supervisors, and professional development activities that provide you with the skills to make an impact in academia, industry, government, or the wider community.

Our practice-based disciplines of Creative Writing, Journalism, Music, Theatre Performance and Translation studies are considered to be among the most outstanding and comprehensive programs of their kind in Australia.

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.

Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for admission to PhD enrolment are:

  • a bachelor's degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant field, and which normally includes a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field;
  • a course leading to a level rated by the relevant department, faculty and committee as equivalent to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field;
  • a master's degree that entails work, normally including a significant research component, including at least 25% of one full time equivalent year of work, including a thesis. It is normally expected that a grade of honours 2A has been obtained for the research thesis or project. Where ungraded, examiners' reports will be taken into account; or
  • have qualifications which in the opinion of GRC are deemed equivalent.

This course consists of a creative practice project and a written exegesis

You must, in consultation with and under the direct supervision of a member/s of Faculty academic staff:

  1. carry out a research project on an agreed topic approved by the school or centre of enrolment in your chosen discipline for a specified period, including attending and/or presenting at seminars and other related activities as indicated by the relevant School;
  2. submit, for examination, a dissertation component which meets the requirements of the examiners consisting of:
    i) a written exegesis of a minimum of 30,000 words that articulates the conceptual,   methodological and aesthetic context for the creative works; AND
    ii) one of the following practice-based creative components in line with disciplinary  requirements.

    The total combined thesis components must not exceed 100,000 words.

Fees

Research Training Program (RTP)

This course is supported by the Australian government's Research Training Program (RTP). Under the RTP, domestic students are awarded an RTP Fees Offset which covers the cost of course tuition fees. The estimated annual value of Australian Government support for an RTP Fees Offset is published on the University Graduate Research Scholarships website. The RTP Fees Offset duration is equivalent to the course duration, based on your commencement date and no more than 4 years (FTE) for students enrolled in Doctoral courses and no more than 2 years (FTE) for students enrolled in research Masters courses.
