The Doctor of Philosophy (Joint PhD with The University of Bayreuth) is a research-intensive course that allows students to develop their own research skills and knowledge. Students in this course will work with supervisors from both Monash University and University of Bayreuth to conduct research on an agreed topic. The Joint PhD  is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to become leaders in their field. The program is open to both domestic and international students. Applicants must have a strong academic background and a research proposal that is approved by both Monash and the University of Bayreuth.

Course Handbook

This course consists of a research and thesis component

You must, in consultation with and under the direct supervision of a member/s of the academic staff:

  1. carry out a program of research on an agreed topic approved by the school of enrolment in your chosen discipline for a specified period, including attending and/or presenting at seminars and other related activities as indicated by the school.
  2. submit for assessment a thesis of not more than 80,000 words on the program of research which meets the requirements of the examiners. Submission of a thesis including published works may be permitted.
  3. undertake any additional requirements specific to the University of Bayreuth, including an oral defence as part of meeting Bayreuth's examination provisions.

Scholarships

Applicants who are applying for a Joint Award with Monash as the home institution are able to apply for central scholarships, provided that eligibility criteria is met. Further information can be found on the University Graduate Research Scholarships website and Applying with us.

Fees

Research Training Program (RTP)

This course is supported by the Australian government's Research Training Program (RTP). Under the RTP, domestic students are awarded an RTP Fees Offset which covers the cost of course tuition fees. The estimated annual value of Australian Government support for an RTP Fees Offset is published on the University Graduate Research Scholarships website. The RTP Fees Offset duration is equivalent to the course duration, based on your commencement date and no more than 4 years (FTE) for students enrolled in Doctoral courses and no more than 2 years (FTE) for students enrolled in research Masters courses.
