In this course, you will specialise in key areas of interpreting practice in legal settings, which include police and court interpreting. You will gain essential knowledge and specialist language specific to these fields.
You will learn about the communication styles and discourse features of the various participants that legal interpreters encounter. You will work with police officers, lawyers, judicial officers, prison and parole officers, as well as individuals who may lack specialised knowledge of the legal system.
The course will provide you with the opportunity to focus on both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, using English and other languages. You will explore interactional approaches to interpreting, along with theoretical concepts related to legal interpreting as emerging research fields.
The translation component of the course addresses specific translation issues in specialised fields of legal and financial translation. The focus is on the development of practical skills in translating authentic texts in these domains, critically applying theoretical approaches and utilising appropriate research. You will explore the contexts in which legal and financial texts are translated and discuss effective strategies for achieving the translation purpose.

Entry Requirements
You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.
Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)
Qualifications
An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a minimum pass (50%) average.
OR
A minimum of three years work experience or higher-education study in a relevant field*. *Applicants are required to provide a Curriculum Vitae and a reference from their employer. Relevant fields can include (but not limited to): linguistics, applied linguistics, language study or teaching, translation and interpreting, TESOL and speech pathology.
English requirements
Applicants must also meet the English language requirements.

Additional selection criteria: Applicants must have NAATI certification as a Certified Interpreter or Certified Provisional Interpreter in a NAATI recognised language.
