Applying for scholarships and grants

Monash University has a wide range of grants and scholarships to help us attract the best, brightest, and diverse minds to help us tackle the global challenges of our age.

Each year Monash gives out $30 million worth of grants and scholarships, and the good news is that your eligibility for the majority of them is assessed somewhat automatically when you apply to study at Monash.

That means that when you apply to study a course at Monash, we’ll take things into account such as where you’re from, your academic performance, or your background and offer you a grant or scholarship alongside your offer.

So, in the vast majority of cases you don’t need to do anything specifically to apply for a grant or scholarship.

Good question – it’s one we get a lot. Luckily, the answer is pretty simple.
A grant is a one-off payment given to you at the start of your study. Some notable grants include:
A scholarship is an ongoing payment given to you in order to support you throughout your studies.
Beyond monetary payment, some scholarships will include access to specialised support structures to make sure that you’re getting the best out of your time with Monash.

However, there are a couple of things you need to do to be considered for a grant or scholarship – most of which you would do when you apply to Monash anyhow:
- If the grant or scholarship is based on your location (such as an International Study Grant), you’ll need to provide proof of residency when you apply – but you do this anyway as part of your course application
- If the grant or scholarship is based on academic performance, you’ll need to provide academic transcripts (if applying directly) – but you do this anyway as part of your course application. If you’re applying through VTAC, you’ll be assessed automatically.
- If the grant or scholarship is based on equity or educational disadvantage, you will need to submit a VTAC equity schemes (SEAS) application through VTAC. Please note that only domestic students are eligible for these scholarships (except for the Monash Humanitarian Scholarship)
- If the grant or scholarship is for indigenous Australians, you will need to provide a Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Heritage certificate or a certified Statutory Declaration form to the William Cooper Institute when you enrol
When you apply to Monash, you will be assessed for any grants or scholarships you may be eligible for if you are successful in your application.

The most important thing to remember is that at Monash, we’ll do the hard work to match you with all scholarships you may be eligible for.
With very few exceptions, we will automatically consider you for all grants and scholarships available based on what you tell us about yourself.
