Perioperative Medicine Short Course - PDM1227

Anyone who is interested in Perioperative Medicine with a minimum Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) can register for this course. It is best suited to the following specialties; Anaesthetists, Intensivists, Physicians, Surgeons, Pain Specialists, Emerging Physicians, General Practitioners. This a fully online (no on-campus attendance) 12 week course with a suggested 4-6 hours of study commitment per week. There is the option to add an on-campus block day, which is a single day to interact with specialists in the field of perioperative medicine. We provide an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the online course to case studies and introduce other important areas in Perioperative Medicine.

  • Develop a cohort of graduates who are well-equipped to lead the implementation of high quality and safe practice in perioperative medicine into the future.
  • Provide a solid intellectual basis for the development of perioperative medicine as an academic discipline and professional speciality.
  • Support and promote the development of skilled practitioners capable of delivering best-practice perioperative medicine in all clinical contexts including remote and rural clinical practice.
  • Contribute to the evidence-base of knowledge in perioperative medicine by the distillation, implementation or conduct of clinically relevant research.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the cost benefits of excellent perioperative care.
  • Equip practitioners to analyse, and manage professional components of clinical practice in perioperative care including ethical and moral dilemmas.

Program structure

12 week course with 12 Modules (one Module per week of learning).

Modules include (but can be subject to change): Cardiovascular Risk, Perioperative Anaemia, Pulmonary Disease, Thrombophylaxis, Coronary Artery Disease and Hypertension, Sleep Apnoea, Pain Medicine, Diabetes, Perioperative Care of the Obstetric Patient, Perioperative Elderly Medicine, Renal Disease, Perioperative Care of the Cancer Patient.

Prof Paul Myles
Director Anaesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine

Paul Myles is Professor and Director of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, and at Monash University, Australia. He is an Australian NHMRC Practitioner Fellow, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science, an Editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, an Editorial Consultant for The Lancet, and an editorial board member of Anesthesiology and Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.

Dr Jonathan Nicholson
Perioperative Medicine Short Course Convenor and Lecturer

Dr. Jonathan Nicholson is an anaesthetic specialist at The Alfred. He undertook a fellowship in Intensive Care and Perioperative Medicine at The Alfred where he helped evolve the perioperative service through the establishment of formal post operative reviews of the high risk surgical patients. His interests include medicine and quality improvement in the post-operative period, trauma anaesthesia and retrieval medicine.
