NHET-SIM - PDM1007

The NHET-Sim Programme is designed for individuals from all professions across Australia who currently or intend to use healthcare simulation as an educational method with students or health professionals.

NHET-Sim is comprised of thirteen modules with e-learning and workshops.

NHET-Sim provides entry level learning experiences for individuals new to simulation-based education. For those with experience in simulation-based education, NHET-Sim provides an opportunity to reflect on existing and future simulation practices.

The NHET-Sim Programme consists of ~33 hours of learning activities over three months.

Learning Objectives:
There are over 60 learning objectives across the thirteen modules. Thebreadth of topics is a feature of the NHET-Sim programme. After completing the core modules, participants would be expected to be able to:

  • Define key terms used in simulation-based education (SBE) (e.g. simulation, immersion, realism, safety, engagement etc)
  • Discuss drivers for SBE
  • Describe various types of simulation modalities
  • Explain key components of SBE (e.g. scenario development, briefing for learning, feedback strategies, support mechanisms for participants, evaluation)
  • Debate the benefits of teaching and learning with simulation
  • Debate the limitations of teaching and learning with simulation Access publicly available resources on SBE
  • Outline theories that inform SBE
  • Outline the responsibilities of a simulation educator
  • Review and demonstrate the preparation phase of the simulation cycle
  • Review and demonstrate the briefing phase of the simulation cycle Review and demonstrate the debriefing and feedback phase of the simulation cycle

Professor Debra Nestel

Debra Nestel, PhD, is Professor of Healthcare Simulation in Education. Debra completed her first degree at Monash and has since lived and worked in Hong Kong, London and now back in Melbourne. Debra leads a national programme in simulation education (www.nhet-sim.edu.au), a network in simulated patient methodology (www.simulatedpatientnetwork.org), and is Editor in Chief of Advances in Simulation (www.advancesinsimulation.com), the journal of the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine. When Debra is not at Monash, she is busy being a Professor of Surgical Education, Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne. In this role she is Course Director of the Graduate Programs in Surgical Education, co-badged degrees with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She is also Course Director of a new suite of programs in Surgical Science. Debra is passionate about research and writing has published over 140 peer-reviewed papers in health professions education, published an edited book on simulated patient methodology (2015), and has two edited books for publication in 2017, on healthcare simulation and on surgical education. She has won many awards and prizes for her work in simulation. She can often be found in a Qantas lounge or plane on her way to or from another conference, course or meeting in Australia and abroad. Debra is looking forward to working with the MIHCE team.

Associate Professor Margaret Bearman

Margaret Bearman, PhD is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE), Deakin University. She is an expert educator with particular interests in simulation, assessment/feedback and research synthesis. Over the course of her career, Margaret has designed and conducted rigorous qualitative studies, evaluation research, systematic reviews and randomised trials. She has written over 70 publications and co-edited book on simulated patient methodology. Her government reports have significantly affected Australian health education policy and practice. Her interest in simulation methodologies spans all health professions and modalities, with experience developing and researching virtual patients, immersive simulations, role-plays and simulated-patient methodology. Margaret has been awarded a range of commendations and prizes for her work as a simulation educator and researcher.

NHET-Sim online modules are available throughout the year on demand. Visit the National Health Education and Training in Simulation website for more information.
