The Graduate Certificate of Legal Studies is designed to equip non-lawyers with the legal skills and knowledge they need to make better managerial and commercial decisions and to lead their organisations effectively. As a graduate certificate legal studies student, you will receive a theoretical and practical grounding in a variety of legal areas and gain a competitive edge in your chosen career.

The aim of this course is to:

  • Strengthen your knowledge in a specific area of law relevant to you
  • Help develop your skills in information synthesis and critical analysis and apply them in professional and public decision-making
  • Improve your ability to articulate persuasive arguments, reasoning and conclusions about legal topics to legal professionals and broader audiences

The Graduate Certificate of Legal Studies is a 24 credit point course, equivalent to four units of study worth 6 credit points each. With more than 40 units to choose from, you can tailor your experience in line with your interests and aspirations.

Study areas include international and Indigenous law; privacy and surveillance; environmental law and climate change law; terrorism and human rights legal issues; and workplace law including topics such as discrimination law and labour law.

The flexibility of the Graduate certificate legal studies allows you to complete it in as little as six months or take up to three years if needed, depending on your personal and professional commitments.

Credit for prior learning or work experience

Applicants who have completed postgraduate law studies with another institution within the last ten years may apply for credit for this course. The maximum amount of credit that can be granted towards masters courses from other institutions is 12 credit points, two units. Students may be eligible for credit for up to 50 per cent of the course (24 credit points) for previous masters level studies in law at Monash.

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification), or a minimum of three years relevant work experience approved by the faculty.

The total fees for 2025 for this 24 credit point (6 month full-time or 12 month part-time) course are:

The equivalent fee per 48 credit points representing a standard full-time course load for 2025 would be A$43,000
