Fundamentals of Clinical Coaching (FCC) - PDM1160

The major content is the provision of knowledge on theory and key concepts in professional coaching and opportunities to develop the skills for enactment of high-quality clinical coaching.

The teaching and learning activities are diverse and include reactions to readings and other learning resources (recorded lectures/conversations between experts), reflections on experiences, case study development and analysis, self-directed research, peer and expert review, role-play activities in triumvirates, observational practice, vodcast/podcast development and more. The course provides a strong theoretical underpinning and enables opportunities for practice.

This course is designed for anyone involved in supporting the development of health
professionals, especially those involved in continuing professional development activities.

What you will learn

After this course, you will be able to:

  • Distinguish coaching from other educational/training approaches (e.g. supervision, mentoring, teaching, lecturing, counselling etc.)
  • Describe the GROW model of coaching
  • Demonstrate coaching skills such as deep listening, questioning, goal setting, facilitating reflection and feedback
  • Apply educational theories and concepts to clinical coaching practices
  • Critically review the benefits and limitations of coaching in clinical practice
  • Plan a strategy for developing and maintaining coaching skills

Course webinar requirements

There are weekly live webinar sessions throughout the course. Each session takes place in evenings and the dates will be confirmed closer to the course commencement.

  • Assessment (assessed version of the course only)
  • Assessment 1: Review of targeted coaching strategies (up to 1200-1500 words) (20%)
  • Assessment 2: Recorded coaching session (up to 30 minutes) (40%)
  • Assessment 3: Written reflection on coaching session (800-1000 words) (10%)
  • Assessment 4: Asynchronous online communication (30%)

Program structure

The course aims to develop the coaching skills of clinicians, combining both theoretical foundations and practical applications of professional coaching. Participants will explore concepts essential for delivering high-quality clinical coaching and apply them through diverse learning activities.

These activities include readings, recorded lectures, structured participant reactions, written reflections, case study analysis, self-directed research, peer and expert review, role-play, observational practice, and the development of vodcasts/podcasts.

Overall, the course provides a solid theoretical framework supported by extensive opportunities for skill development and real-world application.
