How the program works

The Diploma of Art and Design is delivered in two parts:

Part 1: Foundations and folio development
In Part 1, you’ll focus on building fundamental creative and technical skills while beginning to develop your personal folio, a collection of your own creative work. This folio will form the foundation of your application into a specialised stream in Part 2 and your future studies.

Part 2: Specialisation and university-equivalent study
In Part 2, you’ll choose to specialise in one of the following streams:

  • Design: Prepares you for Monash University's second-year entry into Communication Design, Industrial Design, Spatial Design, or Collaborative Design.
  • Architectural Design: Prepares you for second-year entry into the Bachelor of Architectural Design at Monash University.

During Part 2, you’ll study the same curriculum and complete equivalent assessments as first-year undergraduate students at Monash University. You must complete both trimesters of Part 2 to be eligible to receive the Diploma qualification.

Entry requirements and credit exemption

This course is equivalent to two years of full-time study and is delivered in an accelerated format, allowing you to complete it in just 18 months.
Depending on your academic background, you may enter at different points in the program:

  • Part 1: 9 months (2 trimesters)
  • Part 2: 9 months (2 trimesters)

Your entry point will depend on your most recent qualification:

  • If you have completed an Australian Year 11 (or equivalent) with the required scores, you’ll begin in Part 1 and complete the full 96 credit points.
  • If you have completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) with the required scores, you may be eligible to enter directly into Part 2. You will receive 48 credit point exemption for Part 1, reducing your course duration.
