About Sustainability Transitions Lab

Sustainability Transitions Lab (STL) works towards circular, climate-safe and nature-positive futures by bringing together researchers, businesses, governments and communities to transform the systems that shape our societies and economies.

As one of Monash Business School’s pioneering Impact Labs, STL brings together leading-edge interdisciplinary sustainability expertise to advance research, collaboration,m and real-world impact, in line with Monash University’s Impact 2030 strategic goals.

Our people, partners and networks

STL is directed by Professor Rob Raven, with co-directors A/Prof Anita Foerster, A/Prof Martin Geissdoerfer, and Dr Darren Sharp, each overseeing one of STL’s dedicated research programs: nature-positive, circular economy and climate-safe transitions respectively.

Our interdisciplinary team brings together sustainability experts in transition management, living labs, business and management, economics, finance, accounting, law, governance, public policy, behavioural science, systems modelling, and more.

We are also developing the next generation of sustainability researchers and leaders through our graduate research program.

We work through a global sustainability network and established partnerships with government agencies, industry, investors, community organisations and not-for-profit organisations.

What we strive to achieve

We are advancing sustainability transitions through world-leading research and collaboration, helping public, private and community organisations navigate and accelerate systemic change.

Combined, these programs address the Triple Planetary Crisis of biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change - identified by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as the defining sustainability challenges of the 21st century.

STL is tackling these challenges through the lens of sustainability transitions: long-term, far-reaching changes in how societies meet fundamental needs such as energy, housing, food and mobility to achieve more sustainable ways of production and consumption.

We also specialise in nine cross-cutting and dynamic capabilities that are critical levers for enabling and accelerating sustainability transitions in the real world.
