Climate-safe Transitions

Sustainability Transitions Lab’s Climate-safe Transitions research program investigates the governance, institutional and organisational transformations required to achieve climate- safe and climate-resilient futures.

Recognising that climate transitions are fundamentally governance challenges, the program examines how transition pathways emerge, stabilise, accelerate or stall under real-world political, economic and social conditions.

Key research themes include:

• governance innovation;
• the role of public policy, regulation and law in shaping climate transitions;
• the governance of climate adaptation and resilience;
• the interactions between climate mitigation, adaptation and broader societal transformation.

A distinctive focus of the program is the role of businesses, markets, finance and corporate governance in climate transitions, including how firms respond to, shape and are transformed by changing institutional, regulatory and market environments.

Particular attention is also given to place-based transitions, urban experimentation and living laboratories as sites of governance innovation and institutional learning. The program also strengthens dialogue between sustainability transitions scholarship and research in management, economics, finance, accounting and law.
