Why volunteer for sustainability?

Note: These are independent initiatives. Campus Sustainability curates this list to help students discover opportunities but does not directly manage or coordinate them. These opportunities are delivered in partnership with the Monash Student Association (MSA), Monash Graduate Association (MGA), MONSU Caulfield and other dynamic student-led groups.

Featured Volunteering Opportunities

The Monash Volunteering Program offers students the opportunity to undertake transformational volunteering activities that enable them to make a real difference in their communities locally, nationally, and internationally. Through this program, students can strengthen their skills, gain work-related experience, and develop their professional network.

Run through the Monash Student Association (MSA), this program provides a wide range of volunteer programs and services based on student needs and interests, focusing on improving the student experience. Opportunities include event volunteering, peer mentoring, and participation in various community service projects such as:
- Environment & Social Justice (ESJ) Department: Organises campaigns, workshops, and events, which includes activities such as sustainable fashion swaps, panel discussions on climate justice, and green careers networking sessions.
- Wholefoods Café: A student-run vegetarian café promoting sustainable food practices and offering volunteer opportunities.
- Free Food Programs: Initiatives like Free Food Mondays, breakfast club, and Take Home Meals aim to reduce food waste and support students facing food insecurity.
- Fresh Food Handouts: Distribute free groceries to students in need.
- Off-Campus Volunteering: Collaborations with organisations like OzHarvest and Foodbank Victoria provide students with opportunities to engage in community service related to sustainability.

At the Caulfield campus, MONSU offers sustainability initiatives through the MONSU.GREEN Crew. The MONSU.GREEN Crew recognises the impact of climate change and has a passion for adopting sustainability practices to improve the health of the planet, people, animals and plants. They works closely with all Reps and the teams to offer a holistic approach to sustainability.

The Monash Graduate Association (MGA) provides graduate students with opportunities to engage in sustainability and community initiatives:
- Event Volunteering: Assist in organising and running MGA events.
- Outreach Programs: Participate in community service projects beyond the university.
- Online Volunteering: Engage in virtual volunteering opportunities suitable for remote students.
Volunteering here cultivates leadership, networking, and inter-campus engagement.

Interested in sustainability, gardening, and community? Get your hands dirty and grow your skills by volunteering at the Monash Campus Centre Garden, coordinated by the Monash Student Association (MSA).
This student-led initiative brings together passionate individuals to learn, share, and connect through gardening practices. Whether you're new to gardening or already a green thumb, all are welcome to join!
This initiative is open to all Monash students and staff, regardless of prior experience, and supports Monash’s broader commitment to sustainability, wellbeing, and active community.
